The nation that leads in AI, 5G Technology will be the ruler of the world.
- Vladimir Putin | Former intelligence officer who is serving as the current president of Russia
Intro :
The future depends upon connectivity. From artificial intelligence and self-driving cars to Telemedicine, all the things we hope will make our lives easier, for this will require high-speed, always-on internet connections. To keep up with the future connected world, the tech industry introduced 5G Technology.
5th Generation (5G) wireless Technology is meant to deliver higher multi Gbps (Gigabits per second) peak data speeds, more reliability, massive network capacity, and more uniform user experience to more users. 5G mainly works in 3 bands, namely low, mid and high-frequency spectrum - all of which have their own uses as well as limitations. The low band spectrum has shown great promise in terms of coverage and speed of internet and data exchange, the maximum speed is limited to 100 Mbps (Megabits per second). The higher band of the spectrum can bring speed around 10 Gbps. That's more than 600 times faster than the typical 4G network.
History :
In 2008, NASA helped launch a Machine to Machine (M2M) intelligence corporation to developed Internet of Things (IoT) and M2M technology, as well as the 5G technology needed to support. In the same year, South Korea developed a 5G R&D program. While in the year 2012 New York University founded the 5G focused wireless unit.
In the past, Qualcomm has played a major role in inventing the many foundational technologies that drive the industry forward and makeup 5G, the next wireless standard.

5G or fifth generation is the latest upgrade in the long-term evolution (LTE) mobile broadband networks. On par with the global players, India had, in 2018, planned to start 5G services as soon as possible, with an aim to capitalize on the better network speeds and strength that the technology promised. In 2019 the Department of Telecommunications (DoT has sought inputs from telcos and other industry experts on the sale and use of radiofrequency spectrum over the next years, including the 5G bands.
A 2018 study estimated that 5G will add more than US$2.2 trillion to global GDP and US$588 billion in worldwide tax revenues cumulatively over the period from 2020 to 2034.
Appreciation -
- Artificial Intelligence :
- 5G and AI are two of the most disruptive technologies the world has seen in decades. While each is individually revolutionizing industries and enabling new experiences, the combination of 5G and AI is going to be truly transformative.
- Processing data closer to the source through on device is important since it offers crucial benefits such as privacy, personalization, and reliability, in addition to helping scale intelligence.
- The raw data never leaves your device to go to the cloud. By training on a device with the data, you are extracting the value of the data and preserving privacy.
- Applying AI to both the 5G network and the device will lead to more efficient wireless communications, longer battery life, and enhanced user experience.
- Telemedicine and Health sector :
- 5G in Telehealth has the potential to significantly improve emergency care by helping first responders provide more efficient lifesaving measures under the guidance of expert surgeons and diagnosticians - before they get to the hospital.
- Visionable, a UK startup is one such business providing these services, this is a method being tested in Australia by the northern Sydney local health district's aged care rapid response team.
- Enabling high-speed data transmission, 5G has revolutionized the delivery of low latency stream video, 3D high-resolution medical imaging, and mission-critical interventions.
- People tend to link big data and artificial intelligence with personalized medicine, also known as individualized medicine or precision medicine. However, there should be the technical support offered by 5G, in dealing with precision medicine.
- Internet of Things :
- An IoT platform manages the connectivity of the devices and allows developers to build new mobile software applications. The added value IoT products and services can bring will become especially useful as the telecoms 5G network matures.
- With 5G technology, as the mobile network can be explicitly asked to support ultra-reliable and critical systems, such as automatic control of industrial devices and autonomous self-driven vehicles.
- Mobile operators have a clear opportunity to benefit from 5G, new use cases for cellular connectivity will provide additional revenue streams for operators and the broader telecommunications industry. The GSMA estimates could be worth up to US$400 billion per annum to operators by 2025.
- While the development of autonomous vehicles is drawing much attention, it is unlikely that there will be mass adoption of fully driverless vehicles on public roads for a number of years. The 75% of cars shipped in 2020 in Australia are likely to be connectivity-capable.
criticism -
- Radiation :
- 5G will not replace 4G, it will accompany 4G for the near future and possibly over the long term. If there are synergistic effects, our overall risk of harm from radiation may increase.
- In 2015, 190 scientists, doctors, and engineers from about 40 countries sent an appeal to the United Nations, urging the World Health Organization to reconsider the international guidelines for human exposure to the kind of radiation emitted by cellphones and other wireless technologies.
- There is an argument that the work that points to dangerous connections between electromagnetic radiation and negative human health outcomes tends to ignore much of what we know about electromagnetic waves and the way they interact with the body.
- According to the study of EU, The radiation from 5G mobile phones might be harmful to animals and birds too. For example, high-frequency electromagnetic waves are said to alter insect's body temperatures and impair their ability to orient themselves.
- Geopolitics :
- Chinese companies have made huge investments across the world to spread a 5G network. Chinese tech giant Huawei has signed over 60 5G commercial deals with global leading operators and sent 400,000 5G massive telecom equipment. Huawei is the largest telecom equipment provider in the world.
- The telecom company Huawei is banned in the US, the UK over the threat of data security. other counties like Australia, Canada, New Zealand planning to stop use of Huawei equipment.
- In terms of Militaries who do not have indigenous 5G capabilities for IoT platforms and who allow Chinese 5G, could then become hostage to Chinese technology.
- Uk has proposed to form a group of 10 countries to curb the rising influence of China in the global 5G market.
- The lagging position of India :
- India always had problems in dealing with the spectrum. India is set to miss the '5G bus' following the lack of preparedness, unavailability of sufficient spectrum, absence of encouraging use, and uncertainty around radio waves sale for the next generation of telecom services.
- The country’s existing telecom infrastructure catering to a billion active subscribers may require rapid expansion. Add to that India’s weak fiberization, which is mandatory for high-speed wireless network backhaul. It is likely that India to remain low-paced following policy bottlenecks in the federal governance structure.
- Although Jio, Airtel, and Vi (Vodafone-Idea) are all working with telecom gear manufacturers like Nokia and Ericsson to make 5G a reality in the country.
Conclusion :
To adhere India's ambition of world leader, the 5G technology could be the key to the dream. The government should create policies according to the realities of either of the requirements. Our scientists and industry can bring technology at a winning speed, but where India starts losing out is in slow adoption, getting entangled in policy processes and the crosshairs of the bureaucracy. Delhi should realize the current distrain.
